I started hunting when I moved to WY in 76. Loved it but since moving here 3.5 years ago I gave it up. There's just not enough federal land here. What is here has hundreds of hunters on it!

Well! Gun hunt is over in WI. Muzzle loader is still on this week, but my guys don't do that. My son will still bow hunt some, but that doesn't impede me riding. This weekend is going to be really nice, so I think I'll squeeze in a ride.
I have to get going on some Christmas prep, ( baking mostly), as we are going on a week long trip mid December. I can't ignore the 51 degrees predicted on Saturday, though. I think that calls for a ride. It is December 1st, after all. ;-)

Yes, Nana...I'll be out there this week too...gotta get rides in while the weather cooperates!
I went on a short ride up the road Sunday afternoon, stopped at the crop field and the gate was open, so I went in to let Scout have a cob of corn. As she was picking it up FOUR pickups full of orange guys pulled in! One stopped to talk to me and told me I shouldn't ride that field because they were all going to be hunting (duh!)....and I told him I was just turning around and headed home, so no worries. He said "this is our last day and you can have the fields back" and I said "yay"!!!

That was nice of him. You never know...some people might not realize that they shouldn't ride there. ;-)
Bow hunting goes on for a while yet, right?

It's COLD here but by Fri it's supposed to hit 70. Have a good ride winters around the corner.

Bow and musket hunting goes til the 6th, then there is a 6th-9th antlerless hunt, but I'm not sure if that's guns, bows or what...do you know? Sounds like you'd better get out on Sunday, Denise! If it got to 70 here now, it would be too hot to ride my shaggy beast!

I don't know. In fact, I thought bow hunting went longer. I really don't listen anymore, though. I just smile and cook. ;-) I love that they have so much fun.
We are actually going to TN in December so the boys can hunt down there, too. ;-)
Denise...it's been really cold here, too. I can barely take it. I think the high was 25 yesterday. I know that's not really cold for this area, and the worst is yet to come. I'm going to ride on Saturday afternoon, if all works out. Then I'll bake Christmas cookies on Sunday. I really can't believe we are getting such warm temps this weekend! It will be December! Wouldn't it be great, Wendi, if we got another warm/mild winter? I couldn't stand it....that would be too awesome. My horses already are not eating the round bale we put out. They munch a little bit, but then head out to their pasture to graze.

I'm not sure if there's any hunting at all left here. The guy down the road and around the corner has some type of pheasant hunting place where he raises pheasants and has hunts on his place. I love it when the pheasants get loose, they are so pretty. My guys go out and graze too but they also stand in the corral and eat their round bale or behind the corral where the other RB is. They've got the one in the corral almost eaten probably only 200lbs of hay left of it which means come the coldest months I'll be feeding the alfalfa and brome. Yep planning on riding either Sunday after church or Monday, my days off. I had to go to town and see about getting my windshield chips repaired this morn then bible study this afternoon followed up by butchering two of the roosters. (getting too big for their britches) When mom got out the book though we see we're supposed to keep them from eating the night before, OOPS..they got a reprieve till Sat morn. I hate that it's dark so early and in another couple months it'll be darker even sooner. It wasn't too bad today though, would have been a great day for riding. My SF orderd a DR brush mower that goes through 3" trees and brush. It takes 3 wks to get it but when it does we'll be able to get all that brush and vines in our wooded pasture and plant grass seed in more of the pasture. I'm excited cause we don't have really thick trees but all the ground foilage is thick in the summer. Some of the areas have this vine stuff with thorns that keeps me from riding out there. I'm hoping also that when Sarah comes for the summers she can saddle Boomer and ride out there if we can get a handle on the wild growth. This is the wooded pasture come spring UGH. It's also Buddy's favorite place which Boomer hates he prefers the area closer to the house...probably because we don't catch and ride him much. LOL

I have a strong feeling that Fanny would LOVE that wooded pasture!
Last week when I was visiting the barn later than usual...around 4:00...the sun was starting to set by the time I left, and as I was getting into the car something caught my eye out in the hayfield. The horses were in the adjacent pasture, and they were all alert and heading toward the fence. It was one of the biggest bucks I've seen in a VERY long time! He was gorgeous. From the distance I was at, the 'height' of his antlers when he faced the barn was the same as the 'height' of his body! He'd been in the small bush next to the hayfield for the previous five days or so, but I haven't heard if he's still been around. I hope so.

Do you have mules or white tails there? Hope he survived hunt season. We've got alternative hunting going on this week. The black powder and pistols etc.. Anthony's been walking through the woods once or twice a day but not really HUNTING.

Anthony said he was out in the woods target practicing with a new 10/22 he bought yesterday and a big buck popped up and couldn't decide which way he wanted to run. Anthony of course did not have his pistol on his belt so he missed out on venison. LOL

Many states, with too many deer have a "special" Dec season.
