Tapaderos are very tempting for Western riding. I like the peacock irons with the elastic band for English style but am not quite sure about something mechanical that is supposed to open when you need it because it might open when you don't. Tapaderos just seem to prevent the problem in the first place. What exactly is a leather kit? Is that to turn cages into taps?

I noticed the second gold star, too!! Congratulations!! I wonder if GR means a leather kit to make tapaderos yourself. Tandy Leather has all sorts of leather projects you can make on your own...especially if you have the proper equipment. I thought Tandy Leather was in the US, but the Canadian site came up; www.tandyleatherfactory.ca/en-cad/6025-00.aspx?countryid=998 It probably costs more to make some of this stuff yourself, but what a feeling of accomplishment to do it yourself I just found this one, from Weaver: weaverleather.shptron.com/p/leather-tapaderos-kit-largeMaybe GR means something different.

Yes we have a Tandy leather place in Springfield, they carry all my seed beads for my beaded halters on one side. I would want them in basket weave if I did them myself. Was thinking I needed a project for those nasty days I'm stuck inside.
Kirk that is the one thing that would keep me from buying them. What if I needed to stand in one stirrup? Would it come undone? There have been times when Buddy has had no choice but to rub a tree on one side and I've had to shift sideways and lay that leg over the back of the saddle leaving most of my weight in the one stirrup. Have they tested that stirrup in rough terrain where most of us ride?

I had the English peacock safety stirrups on my first treeless saddle. I came off Fanny and the elastic broke...and the stirrup bent! I never did use them again, and bought Western stirrups for the saddle instead. In that instance, I had mounted Fanny beside some barrels. My intention was to back her up or turn her to the right when I got on her, but she decided to go left and passed between the round pen boards and the barrel. My foot got squished between her and the boards, and she took that pressure as a cue to take off really really fast. I was left behind and my foot twisted in the stirrup, thus the broken elastic...and maybe the bent stirrup? I don't know if the force of my foot bent the stirrup or if it bent when I was squished between Fanny and the boards. If it was the squished part that did it, no wonder she took off.
I had tapaderos on one of my saddles, and I liked the security of knowing my foot wasn't going to go through, but they did add quite a bit of weight to the saddle. And they kept banging into my shins when I carried my saddle. lol

HMM I never thought about the added weight although my oxbows are probably already heavier then what you're used to? If I put them on one of my saddles it would be the Colorado Ranch saddle and it's already heavier then my Old West Tucker. None of my saddles have ever had the aluminum stirrups. I like wood and rawhide best.

This is a western safety stirrup that looks good and works on rotation rather than pressure so you could stand on one side without it affecting it. www.breakawaystirrups.com/how_they_work.htmlOf course at their prices they should look and work wonderfully. They are more than I paid for my saddle.

I like the stirrups in the picture with the concho but they're not in the pages with the break aways. $500 for STIRRUPS! WOWSA

And now you know why none of us has them Of course IF I was a professional rider and IF I did competitive gaming and IF I made a ton of money I would have several pairs. But since none of those things are true I just keep up the medical insurance and Mercy Flights Air Ambulance membership.

I don't but it's an hour by road to the nearest hospital. In fact tonight one of our police officers shot himself in the leg and had to be flown out. $75 a year covers your whole family and you receive NO bill for ground or air ambulance service.

HS, they've been advertising the air lift insurance here. I've never heard of it till last week. Our hospital in Bolivar has such a bad rep that most people say take them to Springfield (another 40 mi) because if they perish on the road they've lost nothing...That's how bad the hospital in B is!
