I read that about bastard strangles, too. Weird how something that should help, like meds, can actually make matters worse.
GR, Fanny will be 12 in early May. Already!! Where did the time go?! She's pretty healthy, so I'm not too concerned about her.

I've never had a vet out for strangles; just let it run it's course. When I was at the large boarding stable, while my mare was sick, several of the boarders became extremely angry & wanted to confront the "cause" of the outbreak. One day I got there to check on my mare & quickly got surrounded by 7 or 8 very angry horse owners, they claimed my mare caused it & demanded I reimburse them for their vet bills or they would "get" me & my horse. I asked how my mare could have caused it because she was the 4th or 5th horse to get sick, not the 1st, & my mare had never been off the property in the almost 3 years she had been there so how could she have been exposed? I than reminded them of the trail riders who came back from a trail where they shared a tie line with a sick horse & that their horses got sick before mine did. Quickly caused them to back down & then found out that the horse to get sick 1st & was healing up had been moved out to another stable just that morning. Had to have a long talk with the manager, seems he "forgot" which horses got sick 1st.

Cyndi; all antibiotics, given wrong, cause problems worldwide with all warm blooded animals. It is all the antibiotics in meat, milk, the water, the soap & using them wrong is what is causing antibiotic resistant diseases now.

And taking anti-biotics every time you have a sniffle! There was something on tv about why dr's are prescribing so many anti-biotics and it's because mom's expect them and dr's feel compelled to write the prescription instead of telling the parent to let the sniffles run it's course.

Oh, V, that is awful about how those boarders 'ganged up' on you!!! That's outrageous!!
We rarely go on antibiotics in our house. Last year both our kids had their wisdom teeth out, so they were on antibiotics, and I'll bet it had been years before that that any of us have been on them. We are very thankful that we're healthy.

So much for saving money; I usually do 1 set of vac's on my own, than have the vet out for the 2nd set (Bear can't have all the vac's at once or he has a severe allergic reaction, so they have to be strung along). Got the flu/tentnus shot from The Family Center, now both horses have an abcess on their neck. Never had that happen before.

I've seen it happen and the only thing they can do is wait for the meds to dissipate into the body. Seems like it takes something like 2 wks?
I don't do shots till May, have always done them in May because that's when it started looking like Spring may be coming in WY.
I was on anti-biotics for that root canal, they had me on it when I went to WY in Aug because we couldn't get the root canal and crown done before I left. I just took a sudafed 30 min ago, the weather is putting pressure on my head and I had a sore throat and ear ache last night. Headache this morn. UGH Have not had this pressure before. Maybe it's the storm coming in with tornadic weather?

Fanny's always been due for vaccines in May as well, and it wasn't until we were at D and T's barn that I found out that most horses are vaccinated in the spring here. D mentioned something about not bothering to vaccinate Fanny until this spring, rather than last fall, because mosquito season was already coming to a close.
I hope those abscesses go away soon, V.
Hope your headache is better, GR.

I don't really trust the vet here, I just don't like his snobby secretaries. They have never been even halfway nice anytime I've gone in so I'll probably go back to my vet. May is Spring? Sore throat and ear ache came back @ work around 7. I took another Sudafed when I got home and everything is going away again but just in case I bought two bottles of Campho-Phenique! Thank You cyndi for asking, this storm seems to have a lot of people I work with all plugged, head achy and giving us sinus crap. WEIRD cause I've almost never had sinus problems, none I can remember anyway.

GR, hope you are feeling better. We have seen so many people at the clinic with colds who want antibiotics. My boss is very firm about NOT prescribing unless he thinks they really need them. Some people get really mad & don't realize he is actually doing them a favor. Yesterday a 70 YO lady hung up on him because he wouldn't prescribe a diet pill for her. He told her to get some exercise and cut calories. She wanted a "quick fix" regardless of how unsafe the RX might be due to her age & other health problems. In AZ May is just about summer. I think spring is usually the first 1/2 of April

I was getting shots done a little in advance before the mosquitoes really came out and to make sure his immune system was going strong when they do. I know in humans that it takes about a week for antibodies to start being made for something never seen before and about 3 days if you've been previously exposed to it. Not sure if horses are the same. Won't be long till mosquitoes start buzzing again...

I see maybe one or two mosquitoes every summer here. It's like OH LOOK A MOSQUITO! We didn't have any in WY either even when we were backed up to the river because it's moving and not stagnant. THANK GOODNESS!!!! mom wanted to have someone dig out the wet weather creek because it used to be a pond with a natural spring under it but I told her the guy probably filled it in because of mosquitoes. I'm glad she never did it although she said to keep mosquitoes away you put some kind of oil on top the water, just a little and it doesn't effect fish or anything.
My soreness in my throat is barely there but I'll be taking my cough drops to work. This storm is just getting big here, hail and 60mph wind coming at us from a little town not far from here. Anthony is putting my SF's truck in the barn and his truck in the garage and SF is on the road with the amish about 3 hours from us and looks like he's driving right into the thick of things. My horse trailer won't fit under the door way in the barn so I just have to hope my vehicles don't get pummeled with hail.

LOL, yes, May is spring around here. We never used to have to start the dogs' heartworm meds until June 1st, because we normally didn't have to worry about mosquitoes until then, but it depends on how harsh the winter was, or how warm the spring is. So far, I think it'll be a slow start to mosquito season. In the past couple of years, the vets have been suggesting that we start the heartworm meds in mid-April. Actually, they are starting to suggest, more and more, that we keep our dogs on heartworm meds all year round. Glad you're feeling a bit better, GR. I hope your sore throat goes away altogether! And I hope you don't get pummelled by hail!!! LMM, it's amazing how many people go to the doctor when they have a cold or flu, isn't it? And then they want antibiotics. Isn't the recommendation that unless you can't keep anything down, have a really high fever, or are dehydrated, stay home and let it run it's course? Don't we all want a quick-fix like that 70-year-old lady? My mom is 71, and I know she'd like to lose some weight, but she's more apt to do it like your boss suggests. My 90-year-old friend gets on her exercise bike and pedals two miles before every meal!! My biothane stirrup leathers and replacement throatlatch came in today!! The throatlatch is a fraction too big, but it still fits into the headstall, so we're okay. Because the opening at the top of my stirrups are about three inches, and the stirrup leathers are only one inch, I took some nylon webbing and sewed velcro to it and I wrapped it around the stirrup leathers as "keepers". They are nice and snug, and the stirrups look like they won't be sliding around. At least there won't be any danger of them turning upside down on the leathers Looking forward to going to the barn tomorrow and trying out the headstall (it has a different bitless noseband on it) and having stirrups that are the right length for me!! I'm going to ask M when we can do another lesson

Better too big then too small. Are you going to ride tomorrow?

I was thinking about saddling Fanny up today, and was all excited to switch out the stirrups. Then I held the new ones up to the old ones, to see how much shorter I needed to make them...and discovered that I need to add more holes to my new leathers in order to make them short enough I'll get my husband to drill holes, since you can't just punch holes in biothane too easily. So I didn't ride today. My lesson is booked for Monday morning, though!!
