W, I know what you mean about ending up with a dressage saddle. Over the past six years I am quickly learning not to dismiss different types of tack, or anything for that matter I've learned to be quite open minded to at least give something a chance

Denise...you know I love you, but I gotta say that whether or not someone should wear a helmet has nothing to do with how athletic they are. Things can happen that no one could do a thing about, like my DD's accident. Being an advanced rider didn't help her a bit. At the time of her accident she was jumping cross country courses like her tail was on fire. She was probably at the top of her game. Her horse fell, and no one could have done a thing about that.
Of course, wearing a helmet is a personal choice, (unless you are a minor that I'm responsible for), but even very skilled riders, who are athletic should be wearing a helmet.
There is a site on line that I enjoy reading called The Pioneer Woman. Her kids work cattle, and they ride hard. She has been asked to address the helmet issue, since they don't wear them. She said they feel if their kids fall off and hit their heads they will be more tough.( I'm totally paraphrasing) HUH??? that just blows my mind. Head injuries are serious. I've seen some pretty good wrecks, and most involved good riders, and talented horses. Every one of them had a helmet on.
Every time I post a picture of my granddaughter on FB riding a horse I get "good for you" comments from people regarding the helmet. At first I was really shocked. In my mind it's the only way to go, and when I see kids without one, I am surprised.

HI Wendi! Let's not talk about boots...ok? I. Have. A. Boot. Problem. LOL. Don't ask my DH about boots either, ok? Seriously, though, I love The smooth bottom fat babies. I've got a pair that is getting really worn in looking and I could wear those things 24/7. I wear them to ride, and out in public. I've been wearing them all winter when I go someplace. I've got others, but that pair is just right. They are slightly big, so if I did get hung up, my foot would slide out, too. And i can slide them on and off to adjust my spurs. Love them! I've got several Fat babies, and one or two pairs of the Ariat Terrain's, and some other Ariats that lace up. I admit...some of them I have gotten as hand me downs from my daughter, and some I have purchased. I think I like the hand me down's the best.

nana I won't defend my choice especially now that Matt is 21. If I fall off and hit my head, I'm insured and it only means that the Lord will see me home a bit sooner than I planned. As you know in my experience, walking across the road at 5:30 in the evening and chasing rabbits is more lethal than riding a horse across the plains of Wy. I believe God knows when I am going home and I'm ready whenever and however he calls me.
I would probably buy more boots except they are so dang expensive! Anyone try those slip on boots that come right above the ankle? I see many of them say good for riding. I was thinking it may be a better boot in the summer with my capris, my ariats really don't match capris! LOL
I was wondering where you got up to W, any news on the horse down the road?

I know Denise...I get why you feel the way you do about helmets. I think we both feel equally passionate about our differences there. I know...boots are so expensive. TSC had them on sale at Christmas time, and I almost bought another pair, but my DH was the voice of reason. LOL.

I have feet trouble so I only wear boots to ride in. When I wear boots to walk in it doesn't take long before they hurt my feet. Ariats have worked the best but I can not wear them long time either, unless I'm not on my feet but in the saddle. If they didn't hurt to wear I'd have more and wear them all the time. I have flat feet and I was (and still am to some degree) pigeon toed. I had to wear the braces at night when I slept as a toddler. I only wear good tennis shoes. Mostly Nike basket ball or sketcher walking etc.. and even those I have to walk in and then sometimes after getting home and wearing them for 5-8 hours I realize I can't work all day in them. Mostly some have a slight hump at the arch that you don't notice for a few hours.
nana if Matt were jumping, or doing some type of extreme sport on horseback I would also make him wear a helmet. We always made him wear a helmet on his bike, his electric scooter, skateboard, motorcycles etc..

I have a pair of Laredo boots I bought at least 10 years ago. Either my feet are getting wider (and they are already wide enough) or the boots are shrinking. I am having a very hard time finding a new pair to fit. My feet are short, wide and thick and pull on boots are hard to get on. I have tried tons of styles and sizes but nothing seems to be comfortable. My feet go to sleep if I wear my boots too long. The best fit I've found so far are Ariat Terrains. I want the waterproof ones and a set of half chaps to go with them. GR I had to wear shoes with a bar between them at night when I was little but my feet turn out. It sure made skiing hard when I took that up We have Troxel helmets, I'm not sure which model, very basic. We plan to update them this year. I had been thinking of a Tipperary Sportage. When a friend's daughter was given a horse we took her to the tack store and bought her a helmet and boots and asked her to always wear them. Anyone that rides one of our horses has to wear a helmet.

Yes the saddle lox? black and white shoes with the bar in between. My Godfather's oldest daughter is not quite two years younger than me and had the same thing also pigeon toed. My sister a little club footed, that's where the toes turn out right? only she wears the outside of her shoes off. WEIRD She could never wear boots though because she is short and her calves are fat. I've never worn any part of my soles off so I must walk even just not straight.
My oldest has my flat wide feet, my others all took after their father with the narrow, high arch feet. Lucky them.

Anyone here ever tried an Ovation Endurance saddle? I tried one when getting a riding lesson and really liked it but don't know enough to really trust my own judgment yet. I know what feels good on me but still learning about what feels good for the horse.

Helmets, absolutely for me! I came off several years ago, the first time I had really worn mine. Something (my guardian angel) made me go back & put it on at the last minute. I had turned in the saddle to say something to the girl riding behind me, he spooked and I flew off the side. Broke my helmet but I don't think I'd be here if I hadn't been wearing it. Haven't ridden without one since. I've had several Troxels but have been wearing a Tipperary Sportage for several years & LOVE it. Boots - I love the Ariat Heritage Roper. Just bought a new pair last week. My old ones were about 15 years old. Tried the Fat Baby's but for some reason the same size as the Ropers just didn't fit right. I have a very narrow foot & didn't like the wide look/feel of the Fat Baby. The salesman last week tried to sell me a pair of Justin Gypsy's, but I'm sticking with Ariat! Also have a pair of the Ariat Terrains but prefer a pull on for riding. Wore Ariat lace-up ropers for a while when I first started riding but I must walk funny because the tongue of the boot ended up way over to the side no matter how tight I laced them.

I have a pair of synthetic lace-up riding boots that I wear in the summer, but my feet get hot. I have a pair of cowboy boots that my husband bought me as a wedding gift, so they are almost 26 years old and are still like new. I really need to wear them more! I'd love to try a pair of Blundstone boots, as people I know who have them, love them. I don't know how wide they are, though. I have a fairly narrow foot with a long arch, so I usually end up having to buy footwear that's a half size larger, to accommodate my arch. I have a hard time buying sandals, because the tops of the sandals are always too loose, so I end up scrunching up my toes in order to keep them on. lol That gives me sore feet, so I just don't bother. In the winter I have been wearing my insulated rubber boots. They aren't too wide for the stirrups, and if I ever get them caught in the stirrup, they'd slide off my foot. Last fall I did buy myself a nice pair of knee-high winter riding boots, but without safety stirrups or cages on my western stirrups, I am nervous of getting caught in the stirrup, because there is no way those babies are coming off on their own! HS, our feet do get wider as we get older, or so I'm told

Going into Buffalo this morn with mom, she's getting her eye's dilated and needed someone to drive. From there it's not too far to Springfield so we're going into PFI to see if my reins have come in. I have been looking for the same braided reins I bought 10 years ago. Mine are starting to show wear. Yes I use them almost every ride and they've lasted forever. Besides I just want new ones. The Shutz are the closest I could find to what I have, the ends are different otherwise they look very similar. LOVE to shop tack. Here's what I ordered....http://shop.schutzbrothers.com/p/brown-black-braided-leather-split-reins
When you go barefoot a lot your feet get wider and larger. I am always barefoot unless going outside then sometimes I wear flip flops. BAD habit.
I'm always leery of those opinion polls, if you say they suck do they actually put that on there?lol
Would love to try an english saddle but don't think I'd feel secure if my horse spooked.

The thing with me and riding boots is they have to feel right in the stirrups. I have to be able to "feel" the bottom of my foot in the stirrup, and it's got to be just the right "feel". I know that's just weird, but I can't help it! That's partially why I have so many pairs of boots!
I have a pair of Ariat lace up boots that kind of look like work boots? They are ok to ride in, but they hurt to walk in. I have arthritis in the ball of my left foot, so I really can't wear a variety of shoes/boots. Fat babies feel good, and I can walk quite a while in them, but eventually they hurt too. The best thing i have found is sketchers shape up tennies and sandals. They are not attractive, but sometimes comfort just wins out. LOL. I can only go barefoot for a few minutes. It hurts to have that foot on a hard surface. I wear shoes in the house even.
Denise...I don't understand why you keep going to the tack store without me!!

You wouldn't have missed anything this morn except my dour mood. I called from the eye doctor and she put me on hold. Their shipment came in yesterday but they only got three sets of the brown in and said the black and brown are on back order and they don't know how long they'll be on back order. I told her to forget it then. They would have known when they ordered that the black/brown ones were on back order right? which would have been last week? and she didn't even know they were supposed to have ordered them for me, I think they totally spaced out my order!~ anyway I will just order them today online.
I wear my socks around till I'm sure I won't need to go out then they come off too. Except in the summer when I put on flip flops. I have a thing though about washing my feet before getting into bed. Even when I've had socks on all afternoon. Gotta wash and dry my feet if I don't take a shower right before bed.
