When we are young we are invincible! When we get old we realize someone lied to us! LOL
My 10 year old niece is learning to ride, she goes from over confident and trying to do too much to immediate fear when the horse surprises her by resisting her wishes. I've noticed it's when Boomer's had enough (gone past our property and wants to return) and tries to get his way that he'll turn and knock her off balance just the tiniest that she suddenly fears she'll fall.
Her off balance is the problem because she has no control when she's fighting to keep her balance. Therefore we're working on riding, riding will bring the balance. I watch and want to tell her that she's not going to fall, it's not like she's really that unbalanced but I can not remember back to a time I didn't have balance or a fear if I was unbalanced.
I remember many times when I lost my balance in a spook or buck and resigned myself to the fact that I'm gonna come off, usually I didn't but it wasn't really a fear of anything except "man it's gonna hurt."
I told mom, I wonder if the fact that she is built like my dad, with longer body and short legs will mean she'll have to work harder acquiring her balance?
