Okay I have a question about shoes. Why do some people only put shoes on the front of their horses? It's not like a ride sits over the horses front legs. He sits on the back and the weight is distributed over all 4 feet right??? So a neighbor from down the way told me it's how it's done. I said hmmm maybe it's a MO thing? she told me nope CO, CA, MO...ALL OVER! And it is because a horses motion goes from back to forward back to forward. OKAY now I'm just scratching my head.

I've been told it's because a horse carries 2/3 of it's weight on the front. Both of my guys are barefoot and I haven't had any trouble on any terrain we've ridden on. I do have 1 pair of boots for my Morgan, but haven't used them since shortly after I pulled his shoes(about 7 years ago)

I've read that a horse's weight is mostly on it's front, wearing on the fronts mostly but when ridden a horse redistributes it's weight using it's rear as well. Most people don't put shoes on the backs because in a herd they can injure another horse if he kicks while wearing shoes. And in some boarding facilities they don't allow back shoes at all but I've never heard anything about forward motion??

My mare got kicked in the chest by a rear-shod horse shortly after I got her, and it made quite a cut

I've never had problems with Buddy and rear shoes but he only wears them in the summer when the county puts very large aggressive rock on the roads. In Wy he never wore them except the week we took them to the mountain for the womens ride/camp but MO is so wet they use very large rock. I'm surprised you can drive on it and not have 4 flat tires it's that nasty.
