Hello. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the drawback of bareback riding. I used to do it a lot on some older horses. Then I stopped and now I'd like to start riding another horse bareback, but I've heard over the years that bareback riding can be bad for the horse. How detrimental is it? Can I get away with riding once a week bareback for less than hour?

If you are a good rider & only ride short rides it is not detrimental at all. The only times it would hurt the horse would be if you are a very unbalanced rider or if you ride bb all the time.

If you are in shape and balanced then why would riding bareback have any drawbacks v? I used to ride 99% of the time bareback as a kid, teens and twenties, and my horses never showed any signs of problems. I would think it would be better than having a wooden tree and added weight put upon a horse.

The tree supports a person's weight over a wider place, the entire back of the horse, bareback the weight is supported basically on 2 spots right on the spine. It won't cause problems if a person is balanced, but every day for a long period can cause problems in the long muscles in the back. Basically it can cause bruising. I ride bb a lot also, but I also don't ride for long periods of time, maybe 20 minutes at a time.

Thanks V, I'd never heard that. Of course back then I was 130 lbs, and athletic! Now days I ride around the place bareback and my thighs hurt.
