Please pray for us. We are working with a local equine shelter to try to rescue a horse that is 3 miles from us. She's a "2" on the Heneke body score scale and really needs attention for her feet. I've been trying to get a good look at her for months, but she's usually in a horrid shed that is full of manure. Yesterday she was out tied to about a 10' rope that was tied to a tee post in the yard. I was shocked at how bad she looked. If the shelter can get the people to surrender her, we get to foster!!! More details later.........pray for the horse, as this might take awhile.

Some friends looked into helping a starving horse once and discovered the sheriffs could do nothing as long as the horse was being fed (no matter how little) and watered daily. Hope it all works out for you.

Hopefully the owners will let the rescue take her & not fight them. How easily she can be seized depends on the animal welfare laws in your area; hoping they are tough!

I've heard that what Denise said is true here regarding the sheriff. That's why the shelter lady is going to see if they will just surrender to her, though we can call and report and get the sheriff to check it out, to help them realize that people are noticing this horse. If they can't afford to feed her, and they are decent/reasonable people, this will work....if they aren't, then we might not be able to help her, which will break my heart.

Wendi...Is it possible she's just really old? That thought just occurred to me. Some older horses just look horrible. My DD's sport pony looks like a rack of bones in the winter, no matter how much food we put in front of her. Sometimes there are other circumstances. I pray that is the situation here, but if not then I pray you are able to get her out of there. Seeing something like that everyday is really hard, I'm sure.
I've rescued a few horses over the years. I had to pretend to be interested in purchasing them, and then I did pay for them. All were horses I originally went to look at to purchase, and then couldn't leave them in their current situation. One was a mare who foaled almost immediately after getting to my house! I don't understand why people want to keep horses if they aren't able to care for them.

Wendy, hope that if she is being neglected that she gets to come to you as I know she'll get great care. However, Nana could be correct, if she's just old, it may be that they are feeding her properly but she just can't keep the weight on. There's a horse where I board that is really skinny. She's old and has feet problems so she can't carry any extra weight at all. The barn manager feeds her as much as he can without causing her any additional feet problems. She's active and lets all the other horses know she's the alpha mare ;-p

I hope everything works out! If it's neglect, then I hope the owners surrender her. If she's just aged, then I hope the owners are giving her the care she needs. The manure-filled shed makes me wonder :\

She might be old and that might be part of the weight story, but she is standing in knee deep manure AND her hooves are like "elf shoes"....she hasn't been trimmed in ages. She might be "loved", but she is neglected and if they don't have the money or have a clue how to care for her properly, they should not have a horse.

The hoof issue is awful! I just hate that. Knee deep manure? Good heavens. I kind of think some people just don't know any better. I sure hope you are able to get her some help.

Regardless of her age, if she's in manure that deep and her feet haven't been trimmed in ages, she's neglected. That's one of the reasons I moved my horses in January. They weren't standing in manure knee deep but it was ankle deep around the feeder and the barn owners weren't doing anything about it and didn't really seem to think it was a problem. I've been gone from there 9 month now and my trimmer says their feet are in the best shape they've very been.

I am praying that the owners come to their senses and surrender the horse to the rescue. I foster for the MN Hooved Animal Rescue, I will NEVER understand how people can neglect their animals! If they can not care for them then they should either sell them, give them away or contact a rescue. Thank God their are more caring, thoughtful and compassionate people like you in this world. Bless you for bringing this situation to someone's attention.

Thank you all for your support! We are very concerned and I go by there often, but she is rarely out....usually locked in the shed. She does have one window she can stick her head out, but only saw her doing that once. I ran by there today (literally, while on my run this morning), but she was shut up inside. So I prayed for her. I'm kind of antsy today, waiting to hear from the lady at the rescue. I never see any humans around, and haven't yet seen any neighbors to ask them if they know anything about whether the owner would be rational or crazy to deal with! I'll keep you all posted.

There's no reason not to clean up poop or to have her trimmed. Shame on them. Hoping you'll hear something tomorrow?

Will keep praying that you are able to help the poor girl out! Will pray for the horse's well being and will pray that the owners would be reasonable in dealing with the rescue lady, and that they'll surrender her.
