Still waiting for the county sheriff to return calls. If he doesn't by Monday a.m., then we call the state vet instead. If she is surrendered, WE get to foster her here!!!!!!!!!

Did you ever sell your stalls Wendi? I keep thinking about you being a rescue farm.

Nope, we kept the stalls. Funny you mention the rescue farm idea, because there is a rescue farm 2 miles from our door. We have been getting to know the lady who runs it, and we had her over here yesterday to talk about doing some cooperative stuff with her here. She is helping us get through to the authorities about this poor mare, and we are going to spend some volunteer time at her place. We have hit it off quite well, and I think we'll be working together, but I'm not going to become a full-fledged rescue farm or a non-profit organization or anything! BTW, we still have our puppy rescue, Anya, who is needing a home and we also rescued a pregnant mama cat, so we'll have kittens eventually too. Crazy, huh?!

Our feral cat will be going to the vet for a spay on Thurs. She will only allow Anthony to pet her and even allowed him to pick her up last week. The baby kittens are now 7 wks old and we haven't had one single call. Rescuing them seems a lot easier then finding them a home.

The sheriff never returned calls (grrrr), so the rescue lady took it to the state vet's office. They are supposed to check on the mare tomorrow or Thursday and let us know.

The state vet finally checked the mare out today. Turns out she is old (mid 20's) and they have had her for a long time. The owner "does his own trims" (ha!) and thinks that the mare is skinny because she foundered because "a neighbor gave her moldy hay over the fence" (which makes me wonder if there is a concerned neighbor who was at least trying to feed her?). The state vet has given the owner 4 weeks to clean out the barn, get some weight on the mare, and get a farrier over to do a trim. He is going to return unannounced to check on these things. If none of these things are done, then the state vet has the right to take the horse. BUT, my friend with the rescue thinks that if the owner even attempts one of those things and 'makes an effort', the state vet will probably let it slide, because of the horse's age. SHEESH! Don't they know an old horse can suffer too?....even more than a young one, esp. during the winter. I'm not happy with this, but there is nothing I can do yet. Aside from praying for her, at least. And checking on her, which I'll still do. I do think this is a case more of ignorance than blatant abuse.

I hope the owner either does what is asked or doesn't do anything. If he does the requested, it just may be ignorance.

Yes, whether the horse is 12 or 32, it still needs its feet to be trimmed decently. At least the owner knows that there are people watching, so maybe things will get done. Hopefully it was just ignorance and things get taken care of. However, if the mare is alone and they don't check on her often enough to notice that her shelter needs to be cleaned, or her feet need to be done, perhaps they should just find another home for her where she will be checked on regularly and cared for.

Maybe if you just happen to ride by and strike up a conversation you might ask in a round about way if they're looking to give her away? If they are ordered to spend money they may prefer to unload her on someone else? worth a try anyway.

I keep having nightmare thoughts about that guy trying to trim those terrible feet himself....shudder!
Denise, I'm hoping for that scenario to play out -- the bad thing is that I never see people outside when I go by. I will increase my 'ride by/run by/drive by' times now and pray for a human sighting when the time is right.
