I went out to feed today and noticed for the first time that Buddy's right eye has a bluish colored film over it. Anyone else ever have something like this? I'm thinking maybe cataract and praying it's not that he's going blind in it. The other eye is normal at the moment. I won't be able to get him in till next Mon as that's my first day off. Back to work tomorrow.

Winnie has the same film. She scratched her cornea not long after we got her. It doesn't seem to bother her any. It only covers a small portion of her eye, not the entire surface. She has also had some trouble with the tear duct in that eye. It will get clogged sometimes. The vet has had to run a very small tube up the duct from the bottom where it drains into the nasal passage and flush it out with saline. Gunk came out the top near her eye. I had to rinse her eye with saline and put ointment in it twice a day for a couple of weeks. She almost broke my nose trying to avoid it. DH couldn't bear to have her mad at him for doing that so it was my job. Now we make sure she has a fly mask on when they are in long grass to be sure she doesn't get poked in the eye again. I think that technically it's called uveitis (however you spell that) which is also what moon blindness falls under. Hers has not progressed any since it first occurred although it will never completely go away.

His seems to cover the whole or almost the full colored part of his eye. Weird I've never noticed it before but I haven't really ridden or anything in about 6 or 7 months since it got cold.

Hope it isn't anything serious, if it is a cataract it would probably come on so slowly that even going blind won't really bother him. You just have to remember that you are his eyes while you are riding. If it is only affecting 1 eye, that is better, if it starts to affect both eyes you might want to watch out to make sure he can handle pasture ok.

I could put him in the smaller pasture if that happens but I'm hoping it's a cataract. I looked at it better today and it's like a rectangular shape inside the round colored part. Doesn't cover all of it but it's translucent and bluish and I think it's a cataract. Going to take him to the vet on Mon when I am off and see. WEIRD that it's just all of a sudden there, surely I would have noticed if it had been there before the last few days?

Forgot to mention, my friend at work who was riding with me sold her two horses and got out of horses awhile ago but a friend of her husbands from work had to get rid of two horses and he ended up buying them cheap. She said they aren't broke enough for her to ride! she's a beginner/mediocre rider and small framed. I told her to find out from DH how much he wants and I'll go look at the gelding. He's around 8 years old and I have no idea what color you'd call him? he's bay underneath and a roaning over the body. He's a big stout horse like Buddy not sure how tall, she's going to have M measure him for me. She said he's very affectionate and talkative. The other is a QH mare and smaller. NO MARES!! Buddy would never leave the farm again.
