I didn't know until I saw the news tonight that the 2006 ban on horse slaughter has been lifted. They were saying that new slaughterhouses could be in operation in as little as 30 to 90 days. There was such a hullabaloo when they closed them before you would have thought they would have had some opposition this time, but apparently not. Their reason for the turn around was allegedly the economy and the number of abandoned horses. They said it would be for human consumption and shipped overseas.

It's a sad thing to think about but totally understandable. Unfortunately it's not the death but the method that makes me nauseous. If there were an agency to strictly enforce that they are humanely shipped and killed it would be different but the methods they were allowed to get away with in the past is not acceptable IMO.
There is just so much over breeding going on and there are tons of unwanted horses everywhere. Many of them suffer years before dying an awful death. How can people do such despicable things to an animal I'll never understand.

I agree on the necessity, but I also abhor the methods. I was just surprised that it has been kept so quiet.
