That's great, Nana! I will be praying that you can get to the bottom of this. We are blessed to have a number of different vet clinics around. I think the most a vet would have to travel for a barn call is an hour. My friends had to put their mare down on Sunday night The vet came out to see her and said that there was no other choice. They took it very hard. I was talking to their daughter at work last night and she said that her dad was out in the dark paddock sitting with the mare's body until the neighbour came with back hoe. So sad. They were just in the process of buying a donkey as a companion for their mare. Now they're thinking they might buy two donkeys rather than none, so that they have equines to enjoy.

I'm so sorry, tough situation to lose a loved pet. Do you think you could point out a couple of books on how to take care of an equine? maybe one on learning signs of distress and how to treat it, medications to keep on hand and when to use them...something like that? I know with my family they would never see signs of distress in my horses and honestly my ex used to come in and yell in a panic anytime the horses were laying down and didn't get up when he called. It was a weekly thing so I know that information is important if you're going to own an animal of any kind.
I'm lucky that if I leave town my mom and SF can run down and get one of the Amish to look at the remaining horse otherwise I'd never leave.
