Angel is really sick. We are pretty sure she's foundering. We've got her on banamine and bute, and she's down. She won't get up. We managed to get her to her stall, but she lays on her side and groans. I'm camped in her stall with her....and very sad. I've got calls into farrier and vet. We have no horse vets in the area and I can't trailer in her at this point, so please pray we get some good medical direction.
Thank you!

I'm so sorry nana, I hope by now you've located a vet or got her on her feet? Let us know what's happening, saying a prayer for you all.

Talked to vet....treating as founder...waiting for farrier. Vet said banomine, bute, and farrier. She got up and a couple hrs later we got her up and walked her a bit. I'm encouraged. It didn't look good this morning.

Oh my!!! I hope that Angel keeps improving!! I've had my fair share of experience with laminitis and founder, so don't give up hope!! Glad you have stuff to give her, and I hope the farrier gives her some relief as well.

One of the horses where I board foundered too. On all 4 feet and he got abscesses. He was down about 80% of the time for about 3 weeks, got "bed sores". They changed his diet, put a grazing muzzle on him and he's doing just fine now. Hopefully Angel will have the same results as Diamond. Sending good thoughts your way.

Here's the thing: She's been off of grass since Wednesday. I've been giving her small amounts of hay and lots of water. I've got her on a diet. I turn her out in a dirt paddock at night. However....there are some weeds out there. My DH thinks she ate a weed high in sugar. I've put horses out there every single year, and never had anything like this happen.
She's moving better...takes a while to get her going, but she's moving better. Appytrails...your story gives me hope.
Still waiting on the farrier. I will feel so much better once he's looked at her.

I've gone through this a few times with DD's pony. I do not like it! Now I'm confused as to whether or not Angel can have grass? She didn't founder on grass.....

My guys have always been fat but they are also very large boned. Even Boomer is pretty plump but it goes good on his bone structure. Never had a vet tell me they were in danger of foundering or that they should be put on a diet. What I'm saying is that I am absolutely NO help there nana. I would be surprised though if eating weeds at night would do that even if they're high in sugar? or even a couple days of grass? Wouldn't this be something that would have to have been built up over weeks or months?

Nana I hope Angel is better today. I know weeds can be higher in sugar than grasses sometimes. But were there that many weeds? Because of Sage's cresty neck last year our girls had to wait until the grass browned up this year to go out. I have had good luck with giving Sage Remission. Her neck is almost back to normal.

Sometimes "stress" can bring on a bout of laminitis. The last time Fanny got it, we weren't sure what the cause was, but after doing quite a bit of research I found out that there are many reasons to get it. Angel was happy to be back at your place, Nana, so even something like that (considered "stress") could bring it on if it was brewing inside. And if her feet were in need of trimming, that could contribute as well. Hot weather can even bring it on. A probiotic may help get things settled in her hind gut. I've heard good things about Remission, but I haven't used it. Chaste berry is supposed to be good for cresty neck, but some horses don't like the taste of it. Thankfully, there are a lot of supplements out there that can help You just have to do some research and see which one suits you and Angel best. I hope Angel is feeling better today!

Well! Good news! No founder! However...she was in some kind of abdominal distress? The banomine took care of that. She's very slightly off in her right front and quite tender when I touch the sole with a hoof pick. Ideas? Abscess?
The farrier is out of town. Really hoping I can get him out next week!!

Great news that it's not founder! I don't know much about abscesses. I hope your farrier can get to you soon!

It does sound like an abscess. The farrier should be able to pick a hole in it if it's close to the sole and let it drain. Buddy was better 24 hours afterwards but with Frisco his came out the top of his hoof and was a HUGE abscess from kicking the trough all the time. The vet in WY put Frisco on a pain med and I'm positive it began with a Z? for two weeks. Had the farrier come back out and make sure it wasn't a false sole.
When I called the vet here, after we discovered Buddy's abcess back in June? or was it May? he told me to watch it and if it looked like it wasn't getting better to come in and get an anti-biotic. Said many people just put their horse on one when they get an abscess but when he asked who my farrier was, said the Amish tend to be more conservative. You may want to put her on one just to be sure? or keep a good eye on her. And see if he's got a pain med if she's in distress. Bute should not be given in long term which is why the old vet put Frisco on something else.
