For me, anyway! I have been leading my horses to our front pasture every afternoon that I'm home so they have a couple hours with a little more room to run around and also eat the winter grass (saving on hay). They can't be in that pasture all the time, as it has no water or shelter, but it's about 5-6 acres, as opposed to the one acre by the barn that they are in the rest of the time. Today I was riding Scout bareback with the halter around the arena, and decided on a whim to take Tango by the lead rope and practice 'ponying' her around the arena. It worked so well that I just stayed on and ponyed Tango right out the gate and down the driveway and into the big pasture before letting them go. This was very 'brave' thing for me to try, so it felt like a big deal to end the year with something different. I'm sure I'll do it again soon! Anybody else got anything new planned for their horse time in 2014??? BTW, sorry I've not been around much. Still hoping to get the rescue horse (see my last thread), but hope is dim. I don't even like to go by that farm much, because she's always in the barn. I haven't seen her in a couple months, so I have no idea what her condition is now. I have been volunteering at the horse rescue place though, and that's been great!

Well..nothing on the horse front here. Looking at the horses tonight I don't even want to saddle up! Buddy's head is white and the rest of him is mud grey! Boomer looks like he's wearing more of his round bale then eating and it's stuck all over in his mane, tail and fur.
That's great that you're riding and doing new things. I pony Boomer when he's wanting to go but sometimes he's more trouble because he's come to the decission that he's gotta eat every other step. Have you thought about putting up a shelter so you can leave them out?
Sounds like fun to work at a rescue.

That's great, W!!! It sounds like that is a big breakthrough for you. Wishing you more of the same success in the new year!
I'm sorry that things didn't work out with the horse you wanted to rescue, but glad that you are able to work at the rescue facility and gain some valuable experience!

I love this! I can so relate. Every time I do something new with my horses I'm so excited. Especially if it's out of my comfort zone.

Nothing new here either. Rode Royal last Saturday but it's been too cold here since then to even think about riding even in the arena. Stopped by to see them yesterday and they were standing out in the snow and wind instead of being under the shelter. Silly horses but the snow on their backs wasn't melting so I guess they were warm enough.

Too cold to ride here; but looking forward to spring so I can put some time on Marie behind some cows.

We've got 9 below here this morning, so no riding planned for today! The trimmer was supposed to come today, but she has rescheduled for next week! I put blankets on them for the first time this winter last night...brrr! Hey Denise...my horses already have two shelters, so nope...won't put one up in the big pasture, because in better weather I can open gates and they can walk back and forth (or trot...or gallop...depending on their mood!). But in the winter I don't want them to do that because the alley they walk through is a big ditch, and it's slippery. I lead them around the flat way on the driveway! I figure it's a bit of training/bonding time for those days when I can't do anything else but feed/water them, right?...at least we get in a 5 minute walk :-) I agree, nana....getting out of the comfort zone with horses is kind of a rush :-)

Maybe your DH can build a cute bridge between the two? I have cross sections here too so that they don't mess up the grass pasture, I can lock them in the corral with the run in or open up the gate into the woods or open both gates and they can go from corral into either pasture. I have to use the electric fence when I lock them out of the clearing in the wooded pasture. Sometimes they will just eat one spot till it's real short. Unless it's a nice summer night the boys always have to follow me back to the corral if I fence them into the front couple acres. This year when the grass starts growing they'll be locked into the back side of the wooded pasture till they finish eating all the round bales so we don't waste any of them.
It was almost 40' when I got home at 3:30 but we have a storm getting ready to hit this evening through tomorrow at noon. Supposed to get some good snow tonight. At least I don't go to work till 2 and if it's really bad in the morn they'll call off church. We're supposed to get rain before the snow starts but as warm as it is I didn't put the boy's blankets on them. I haven't put their blankets on all winter so far.
