I have a question for anyone about Cushings. Darlene (the lady who bought Risty), said her vet tested him for Cushings & it came back positive. In the 17 years I owned him I never had a vet even suggest testing him for it. Darlene's vet said 75% of the horses over age 18 have it & she is on a mission to make people more aware of it. I know he's not my responsibility anymore, but is it hard and/or expensive to treat? Darlene doesn't seem upset about it (I'm glad for that). If I had known he had it I would certainly have been upfront about it.

Cushings is insulin resistance. I know it requires a low sugar, low starch diet. Thick curly hair that doesn't shed out for summer is one of the signs. It seems like it is similar to type II diabetes in people and can be managed with diet. At least she doesn't have to worry about him being on rich pasture which can cause problems. It doesn't really surprise me that the vet says so many older horses have it considering the number of older people that have developed type II diabetes. DH has it but he just had his A1C checked and he is now in the range for non-diabetics, even less than pre-diabetics. He cut a lot of carbs from his diet, mostly french fries , and dropped a lot of weight. He has neuropathy in his feet and he is working to get that under control, looking at different meds and supplements along with his diet. I think horses can develop laminitis from Cushings if it is uncontrolled. Cyndi in Canada has a horse with it but I think Fanny has a lot more going on than just that, including sensitivities to vaccines among other things. I think Jennifer in SC has a Cushings mare who doesn't have very many problems and they just monitor her feed, hay bags with grass hay filled often so she has it all the time. If the lady that bought him isn't bothered by it she has probably dealt with it before or is at least familiar with it. I don't think many people test for it unless their horse has a problem to suggest it. Some vets are like some doctors that like to test for every possible condition. Personally I'd be more concerned about the equine herpes virus outbreak in NV and AZ if they take their horses to public facilities. That would be a lot harder to deal with. My doctor seems to be reluctant to do much testing which might have more to do with insurance companies than anything else and since vets are usually out of pocket they know if their client is likely to want to spend the money. Like a lot of things I'm sure they can test positive and be asymptomatic as well so you wouldn't notice anything for a long time. I hope I've helped you, feed companies make a lot of special feeds for this so it can't be that uncommon.

HS, that's pretty much what I thought Cushings was. He has always grown a thick winter coat, but sheds readily in the spring. Hasn't been on anything other than bermuda for hay since he gets hot on alfalfa. I might get to go see him on Saturday! Darlene had some questions about his saddle slipping. I never had a problem but I used a cinch tightener & offered to go out & show her how to the the tightener. Hoping Saturday will work for her! Sure miss that guy, but she keeps telling me what a good boy he is & how much she loves him.

Jenifer Becton from the JL board or Laurie (snortie's mom) are on a board called Christian Horse Friends. You might do a search? there's one of the other JL friends named Deb who has a horse named Scottie who has Cushings or IR not sure which but she's dealt with it for 10 years or so. I don't know much other than she always clipped him and had to keep him on a dry lot and watch his hay. Also they get a cresty neck. I wonder if vets are like some doctors, see someone with $$ and find plenty wrong?
Jim used to be diabetic but with diet and lost weight is no longer diabetic. Still tests his finger every morning though. Glad your DH has lost the weight and beat the diabetis too. I worry I'll get it with my weight, trying to lose more but it's hard when you work all hours and you cook for yourself. So much easier to do quick foods.
Rode Rain down the road today. Figured I'd just push him a bit and wait him out etc.. LOL it was a hoot. First two old men came down the road in a big white car, flagged them to slow down please so they are going slow and Rain backs up right in front of their car and no kicking can get him to move he just keeps backing and won't go around it. So after about 3 min I turned him back and trotted back to the yard where we left the road till the car was gone. Back out again and we'd made it almost to the same spot and a truck is coming from the other direction FAST. So I dismounted to keep his hinny from getting squished by the truck and it was the QH breeder from down the road. OKAY so nowhere to mount so I walked with him down the road where there's a herd of ponies on one side of the road and some Amish buggy horses on the other. He got high headed and tail went up and the little pony stud was all attitude and when he charged the fence Rain went sideways so fast both his back boots flew up in the air and landed 12' apart. Glad I wasn't on him!! A friend gave me a set of Davis Boots but they aren't very tall and evidently they must not fit well enough. Need to order a set of cavello's for his hind feet tomorrow.

Wow, what a ride. You would think the breeder would be more considerate but I guess not. Had some sad news in the last few days. The guy we used to have do some work for us is in jail. His original charges were Rape 3 x3, Sodomy x1, and sex abuse 2 x3. Now it is sex abuse 2 x6. Those in town who don't like him only highlighted the worst definition of sex abuse 2, which is kinda sick. If you actually read the law and all the sub sections it could just mean she was under 18. 18 is the legal age of consent in Oregon. That's bad enough as he has a daughter older than that but if she lied about her age or her parents were the ones that filed charges it really sucks for him. It still makes you register as a sex offender. Just a few days before that another guy we know, DH did the wedding a few years ago, was arrested as felon with a weapon, someone with a retraining order and stalking order against him in possession of a weapon. He had 2 rifles, ammo and a blackjack in his car. Last summer before a custody order was in place he took off with 2 of his 3 kids and made it to Utah before he was located. They couldn't charge him with anything on that because they were his kids and there was no custody order in place when he left. All they could do was pick up the kids. But then he went and got a DUI there so that didn't help. He has been doing meth and lost his job, wasn't making the house payment and his wife thought he was. Now she is raising 3 kids on her own, he's never paid any support and can't now, has no vehicle and really only works part time in town where she can walk. So sad, she's looking for somewhere else to live as she will be losing the house before too long. She'd have lost it already if they weren't buying it from a friend of her Dad's. Very sad time in our town right now.
DH stopped eating a lot of carbs, like potatoes, rice, and most bread. He dropped about 30lbs and looks way too skinny if you ask me. When we would do frozen dinners he would get the Atkin's ones. They have very low carbs. I'm cooking more now and we're doing salads with meats and cheeses. It's easier than listening to him complain. I'm really disappointed in WM, they have been out of their Great Value peanut butter cups for months now! I even tried ordering them online and you can't. I sure hope they didn't quit making them, they have Reeses all beat to heck.

HS, that is so sad about all those people. I just don’t know what is going on anymore. Why does it seem like people are just spinning out of control? I should give up carbs, but boy do I love potatoes, rice & pasta! I need to drop a few pounds – I refuse to buy a bigger size clothes! I had a post done yesterday, hit the quick reply button & got an error message for the site. Lost it all! Back to typing the post in Word & will copy & paste it. 😊 I’m going to see Risty this morning! I wonder if he will remember me? It’s been 5 ½ months. I’m still happy with his new home & don’t regret the decision to let him go. Several emails back & forth with the church I attended in Casa Grande. I was baptized (immersion) in 2/12 but at that time they didn’t have baptism certificates. They are going to send me one along with a letter of introduction to the church I’m attending now so I can become a full member. Just means I have to get up in front of everyone (probably tomorrow) and have them announce that I want to join. No big deal, but I really dislike getting up in front of people. Praying that God will move my feet tomorrow! I broke down & ordered a new cell phone yesterday. Getting the Samsung Galaxy s9+. I love my Galaxy Note 5, but it is getting slowwwwww. I think they only make them to last 2-3 years. Mine is 2 ½ years old. Had an iphone for 2 years & hated it. Love my Android! 😊 😊

I finally got my new phone. It's an iPhone 7+. It has wifi calling on it so we can use them at home. Of course DH had to have one too . I know the one guy started doing meth and everything went downhill from there. We have a big meth and heroin problem here. Being close to I5 doesn't help. Just yesterday a guy was arrested in a standoff for human trafficking, holding a 20 year old woman. The one that used to work for us a lot, I'm not sure what's going on. His ex-wife is bipolar and alcoholic and decided she didn't want to be married to him anymore. They have a son about 15 now, I know he was living mostly with his Dad in the woods. He had 2 other older kids with 2 other women and they are all in town here. He's never had a driver's license and has no copy of either his birth certificate or social security card. I have to wonder if they were legally married since I recall needing to have ID for a marriage license. He can't get a regular job and only works under the table at different odd jobs. He said he didn't want to be on the government's radar but we told him if you are constantly getting tickets for driving without a license and being picked up for failure to pay child support, believe me, you're on their radar. He has always been trustworthy and honest with us, never took anything, and always worked hard. It makes us so sad to see this happening. It just seems like it is happening more and more and I'm sure this isn't the only place either. I worry about the kids but short of bringing them to live with us (and that will NEVER happen, we can't handle that) I don't know what we can do for them. We've tried to make sure they have good Christmases by giving them extra money and we check in with the mother that has the 3 kids all the time to see if she needs anything.

I lost a post twice on here a few nights ago and gave up. Don't know why I think I must be hitting something on my board? Drugs and crime are everywhere. They said the 417 area code is #1 in MO which is us. Lots of woods and private property I guess. Sad for the woman hope she finds a new house and a good job to support herself and kids.
Good for you LMM. I hate to get up in front of everyone too but they all know you right? I should be in bed too so I can get up for church!
My old boss came in this morn and was telling me about his youth group, he has some pretty bad kids, 2 boys and 2 girls from a family who comes without mom and dad and they are so awful they even beat the crap out of each other during youth service. He tried to break them up and the oldest kicked him in the balls and bit him three times. He told mom if they couldn't behave then they can't come back. LOL

GR, well they know me now! Last Sunday went really well. Everyone at that church is so nice. I've been going every Sunday (except one for a headache) since I first went at Christmas time. I've met a few people & already knew 2 who have gone there for several years. A new pastor-just took over last November. He's very energetic! I fixed corned beef & cabbage in my Instant Pot yesterday. So Good! Honestly, the first time in my life that I've eaten or made corned beef. I need to go back to Fry's while it is still on sale & get one for the freezer. I love cabbage anyway.

I'm not big on the cabbage but I bought a corned beef and a big bag of carrots and let mom put potatoes and cabbage in it. THEY like the cabbage. I made mine two wks ago in the crock pot but yeah I need to pick up another one while they're on sale. Maybe I'll go tomorrow. Gotta get horse stuff anyway.
I didn't go to church today. I didn't think and put some American cheese in my mac and cheese last night and woke up at 8:27 with a REALLY bad headache. Had it till 11am. I didn't even think about it since it's been forever since I ate American cheese.
It was nice today but I have been inside working on a painting all day. Supposed to turn cold this wk so maybe I will put the brush down tomorrow and go some outdoor work.
