My dogs killed a skunk seeking refuge from the rain under the barn in their kennel Sunday. I sent it off to be tested because I live a block from the elementary school. The vet tech mentioned that she's been told that a skunk doesn't foam at the mouth, it just becomes aggressive without provocation. Results should be in by wed or Thurs! At the results, I'll decide on boosting my dogs rabies vacs or wait until it expires. I also will probably be told about my exposure threat due to the handling of removal of its body.

Marys, Hope it all turns out ok. I've been vaccinating my horse for rabies for several years because of all the dead skunks I see on the highway near here. I hate to admit, but my dogs are a couple of months past due for their rabies shots. They are mainly inside dogs-only outside when I'm out there with them-but I still need to get them done. Keep us posted!

Seems like results should come faster than that! My dd picked up a stray kitten and it bit her....we took it to the vet and they had to put it down to test to see if it was rabid, and we found out it was not later that same day. Lesson learned...do not pick up strays without being protected with gloves, etc. or it's a death sentence for the poor little thing if it bites you :-( She was only 12 or so and just trying to "rescue" it.

in Tx they say 24 -48 hours after specimen is received. UPS may not have run yesterday, so they are mailing today.
Also, an animal (only pets and strays) that has bitten a person is put under a 10 day rabies quarantine, in Texas, if it doesn't have a current rabies tag. If it doesn't show rabies signs, it will be returned. If it shows symptoms of rabies within the 10 days, the animal is destroyed and sent for testing. Wild animals (skunks, bats, etc) are destroyed and immediately sent off for testing.

I hope it's okay. I know if it ties in or not, but we were just talking at work today about the rash of dead skunks on the roads right now. I'm only 14 miles from town and I know there's at least a half dozen fresh ones in the last couple of days.

We also have a lot of dead skunks here lately. Skunks are rabbies carriers. So are Raccoons, which means that they can be born with it but not effected with it although it does infect a victim. There was a news article on tv last week about a farmer's cow that had to be put down because it contracted rabbies. I looked on line and found a few articles about cattle with rabbies!! My dog and horses are all current since moving here but in WY they don't normally do rabbies shots for horses. AND COWS??
My middle son was bit by a stray ferret while camping in the back yard. At the time we didn't know what a ferret even was. They also sent it to Cheyenne to test the brain. It's a shame that no one claimed their missing pet so that it didn't have to die for testing, it could have just been quarantined.
