How long does it take to ride 10 miles on gravel roads at a moderate pace? The roads are somewhat hilly.

I don't know, but WOW...you have 10 miles of road to ride! I'm jealous!
It takes us about 15 minutes to ride the mile to our neighbor's...but that's partly because we have to deal with crazy driver's we don't trust (= dismounting and waiting for them to go by).

![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) we have a 10 mile loop that we bike on, its gravel, but there is not much traffic. Since my bike is broken I decided to start taking Anya at least part of it. We rode approx 2 miles I think tonight! Not terrible long, but it was the first time ever that she has ridden on a public road and she was excited but not bad. We trotted probably a total of a mile LOL! By the time we got home she had the excitement gone. She is totally out of shape! I'm not sure how long we were gone, I forgot to look at the clock when we left. Her being barefoot, I am not sure that she can do the whole loop yet. I have boots for her but they only fit her when she is freashly trimmed.

When I rode with the Sesquicentennial Wagon Train here in 1986 we averaged 4 miles an hour. But that was all walking and a lot of stopping for folks to take pictures.

That sounds like it makes sense ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) thanks!!! Based on 4 mph then it would take us 2.5 hours to ride the loop. I don't think it would take any longer than that. The boys rode their bikes and timed it at 1.5 hours the other day with the bikes. Trying to fit in fun stuff after school is hard when you run out of daylight! We have gotten to where we eat fairly late so we can enjoy the good weather and sunlight when we can!!! If I can get her trimmed and booted we could leave as soon as the boys got home from school and make it back before dark!

It takes us 3 hours to ride to town. It's all gravel except for a short spurt and town is 7.5 miles. Buddy does not walk fast so it may take a bit shorter for you and Anya. I keep telling Buddy "he's pathetic he allows those dang Amish horses to pass us!"

LOL! Too funny! Once Anya settles she has a nice forward walk. JJ is the slower walker, but he can run circles around Anya! He only pretends to be slow.

Waaaaa! I want your 10 mile loop TODAY!...it's a perfect day for it, because it's too soft and wet for the fields, but no wind and getting to 40-ish so I want to ride somewhere. Our road, if we go toward town, is only one mile to a too-busy road, and it's 3 the other way, but very hilly and windy (= scary, because the cars go too fast).

I would gladly share if I could! Traffic doesn't seem to be a huge deal during the week here. And there is a good stretch of grass on the sides of the road that I got onto when traffic is coming. Most people around here are good country people that are respectful of horse riders. My biggest grump around here is all the gun shooting. I love to shoot guns too, so I understand that when it is nice out the gun enthusiests want to get out too, but the horses don't like it lol! I need to shoot more around them to get them used it. If I go one way on the road there are also a TON of dogs on that road. HATE that! The 10 mile loop only has a couple! and one house is my sisters so her dogs will listen to me. But if it were not for all the dogs we could probably ride for HOURS upon HOURS on all the gravel around here!

Devin, try to think of it more of a good thing. You have the opportunity to sack her out to both, dogs and guns. Neither of my guys look twice when they hear guns. My oldest son comes home one weekend per month, sometimes twice from the Army base. He's a gun collector and is always target practicing out in the woods behind the horses. They don't even raise their heads from their food. They also don't care about dogs. We learned early if we chase monsters they run from us. Whether it be school buses or dogs.
I don't have fields to ride in other than our own which is not big. Road riding is all we have here. But we do have tons of dirt roads that are mostly only traveled by Amish buggies and very few vehicles. We also have free trails we can trailer too around the lakes and woods nearby. My two favorite are 20 and 30 miles from here.

Today's a day that riding would be perfect. I came out to sit in the sun on my lunch break because it is high 70s right now. Absolutely beautiful.

Hit the low 70's today here too. BEAUTIFUL! I raked leaves the pasture is full of them and where they are laying up against the fence they are 3' deep. Killing the grass underneath so I raked a bunch of them where they are the worse. (in the corner) My dad will mow the rest down with the 0 turn mower. It'll be in the low 60's tomorrow and then a cool down on FR of course. Not off till SAT. Go figure.

According to wikipedia, the average speed of a 'working trot' is about 5-10 mph. Quite a spread but I suppose it depends on your horse's size to some extent. Tobey is about 14 hh & we cover about a 12 mile loop in 3 hours. The loop has hills & flats, some rock, mostly grass/dirt, a couple wooden bridges & we vary walking, trotting & loping.

Thanks! We haven't attempted it yet, no time/really windy etc . . .
Denise, I would think of 2-3 dogs a training exercise, but the one neighbor going one way has 10/12 dogs . . . I don't want to test that lol!

That's a lot of dogs! One of our neighbors around the corner has bird dogs, a whole pack of them. He raises pheasants and has 250 acres he and his buddies hunt on but they are always in their huge kennels anytime I've ever ridden by. I'm thankful he's far enough away the only time I hear them barking is when I'm out by the woods behind the run-in. Would not want to live really close.
