So, my mom gets this 'birds & blooms' magazine. Someone wrote in & said they put a sprig of lavendar in their birdbath to keep the algae from growing. Think this might work in a horse tank? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Or would the lavendar cause problems if the horses ate it?

If one sprig works in a bird bath which is maybe 2 gallons? how much lavender would be needed in a trough? I haven't found anything better than just occasionally cleaning with Dawn soap and a brush. I tried the vinegar, the baking soda, comet cleanser but Dawn seems to work the best.

I looked at the article again & it said they actually SCRUBBED the bird bath with lavendar. I've tried those 'barley bags' which did not much in my opinion. Stupid algae. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I swear I top their tank off every couple of days - you wouldn't think that crap would grow that fast!

I got a new tank last fall and have not had the problem with algae like the old tank. I think it's cause when you scrub it you have to get it all? otherwise it seems to grow quickly again.

We try to place our tank in the shade in the summer and that seems to keep the growth down a little.

My tank sits in shade all the time because no matter where I put it there's trees above. I had to cover most of the tank to keep all the leaves from falling in and leaving a mess.

Hey, I noticed that my 6 year old metal tank is starting to get a couple small rust spots on the bottom. The water still seems clear and they are drinking it...just wondered if anyone knows if that is a problem? Should I get a new tank? It's not rusted through enough to leak yet...but I can see the orange spots. I can scrub them off, but they re-appear again.

No problem until it rusts all the way through - then you have a nice tank for hay. ;D I wonder if you could get that 'magic' rubber-in-a-can stuff & spray the bottom of the tank to stop a leak. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

They carry stuff at our feed and tack store that is for use on roofs. I tried it, $9. They recommended using it on the bottom of my trough but my holes were too big, should have done it sooner. It's much like a tar but dries hard. I would assume if you sprayed it with Rustoleum on the outside bottom it would stop it as well. I feed hay in it since it's a 4' round one both horses eat out of it.
