KW, I recognize the spark and enthusiasm you have to learn as much as you can, because I had that too!! Don't ever lose it! I started out with reading Monty Roberts' books about 10 years ago, and didn't get into John Lyons until the last couple of years. I eventually did find "Lyons on Horses" on Indigo this past year. I prefer to get my books through Indigo because my husband gets their gift cards through work (he does some software surveys once in a while and they give him a gift card as a thank you), so most of my horse 'library' hasn't cost me anything!!

Cyndi, It's easy to maintain the enthusiasm because I can see what a difference it makes in the horse's comfort when I ride. A happy horse makes it much more willing to go the distance with you and I swear I can almost see them smile at times. I'm not familiar with Indigo (is that Indigo.com?- which is a Laboratory supply website?) or is there a store named Indigo? I learned of a website through the Harvard University Librarian's www.trussel.com which allows you to search multiple book sites. It's a person's private website but on the left, click on "Books and collecting" and you'll see a place where you can type in book info and once you hit read, it populates the information into many search engines. It's a great place to find old out of print books that are difficult to find any other place. Of course your way of finding books for free is preferable!

Oh, sorry, Indigo is "Chapter/Indigo" I've gotten almost all my books from Chapters You said that you're just getting into horses? If so, you are WAY more confident than I ever was!! Mind you, it sounds like you are getting some awesome guidance from your friend, while I kind of just floundered on my own...which I don't recommend to anyone. I am SO happy for you!!

I've been riding only a little over two years and love it. Can't wait until I can consider myself an intermediate rider but advanced beginner at the moment. This forum is a great resource!

We bought a two horse corral across the dirt trek, 25 feet from the other and with permission, extended it out to add one more corral and built another stall. It was 50x80. We got lucky because our second one was on the end with a space between the corrals and the large arena so it was allowed. We also cleaned and went to the corral at least daily and was easy to put all 5 horses out in the arena for exercise. The new houses built near the house we bought had different rules about horses too. 2 acres for 1 horse and an acre for each after. I love that the horses have 12 acres here but to be truthful 2/3rds of an acre was sufficient for 5 horses. They had 16x16 stalls and they had lots of room to run and kick. I hated how small the city corrals were. This was our house and corral we built..BTW Shingles are twice or three times more expensive than metal roofing in WY.

Ghostrider, I'd love to have the view of the mountains and two horses out my back door. You are very fortunate. The white horse looks a bit mischievous in the photo!

Kirk, I divorced my husband and brought two horses out to MO 5 years ago. The grey horse is Buddy and the chestnut is Chipawa. Chip was placed with a friend who was looking for a forever horse when he retired his old mustang. I brought my son's bay out with Buddy. This is our place now, no mountains just grass and trees...everything here is green. This was right after we brought them from WY (sand and sagebrush) to the lush grasses of MO. I swear he was thinking WOW this is all MINE! One of my favorite pics.

I'm in the process of buying 11 issues of "Perfect Horse" and a Stacy Westfall DVD (Ride Safely on the Trail) on Kijiji, which happens to be in the same city I live in. I have one year's worth of "Perfect Horse", so I'm sure I'll have doubles of those issues, but that's okay. I'll take the extra issues to the barn. The DVD was a freebie from Weaver, you got it when you purchased something of theirs, but I looked online and saw that it's worth $50, and it's 90 minutes long. I think $20 is a pretty good price for everything

I was given all the early years of the PH and then all the later years of PH from another person. I had the subscription a couple years in between but I have a whole shelf of PH besides that I was given years of Equuis, Horse illustrated, Western Horse and a couple others. I have a shelf of nothing but horse books. It's great if you need info but takes time to scan through them. I have one of the free dvd's Parelli put out as well. $20 is a great deal and you'll have fun reading through them.

I found on Craiglist a lady giving away 48 issues of Perfect Horse but only problem was she was in Washington State and I was in Maryland. UPS and Fed-Ex were amazingly expensive for the 18lbs of books. Found that the Postal Service has flat rate boxes for a little over $11. The kind soul ordered the free shipping materials and then mailed it to me and I sent her money to cover the shipping. What a nice person!

Yes we use the book box from the p.o too. Horse people are usually nice think it must be the horse rubbing off on us.

I've been told to look for the older issues of Perfect Horse, do you find that's true?

I don't know why? I think that as John learned more he shared more and he perfected those things he did know. I have the old symposium tapes and love to watch the RP-ing but it's the only older stuff I have. I have the speed control dvd and also love to watch it and it's been a really great tool on helping Buddy overcome all those monsters on the trail.

I picked up the older loading and leading and enjoyed it. I'm most of the way through John's first Symposium tapes (Tape 4 of 6). I have the Monty Roberts Join-up DVD but was still thinking of getting John's Round-pen reasoning. I still have his second symposium series to watch with 7 tapes and really looking forward to it. The speed control DVD intrigued me but I have so much else to watch now that will give me something to look forward to....
